NAUTILUS CHRONOGRAPH
The Nautilus collection was born in 1976.
As a representative luxury sports model, many models have been sold based on the concept of creating waterproof watches that are as thin as classic watches.
Typical waterproof watches have a screw-in case back to maintain their waterproofness. However, since the structure is thick, there is a drawback that the sense of luxury is lost.
We eliminated the back cover, which was innovative at the time, and sealed the protruding parts on both sides of the case, commonly known as "ears," with screw shafts to ensure waterproofness.
There is also an episode that was created based on the concept of a sporty watch that would go well with the Range Rover, a famous SUV that was released around the same time in 1976.
The design was created by master artist Gerald Genta, and compared to the sharp octagonal shape of the Royal Oak, the exterior design has a more modest and elegant shape.
This creates a sense of Patek's philosophy, giving it a unique gentleness and depth.
This Ref.5980 was announced in 30, the 2006th anniversary of the Nautilus.
The company's first ever self-winding chronograph, "Cal.CH 28-520," was released in a year that marked many turning points.
Various models have been released derived from this core movement, but the base model is this Nautilus chronograph.
A particularly innovative feature for a chronograph mechanism is the elimination of the small seconds (independent second hand).
Conventional chronographs have two second hands, with a center chronograph second hand for measurement and a second hand for time, as exemplified by ROLEX's Cosmograph Daytona.
This is common knowledge for conventional products. The biggest drawback of conventional chronographs is that the torque (the strength of the power emitted from the mainspring) is significantly consumed during chronograph operation.
Long-term use of the chronograph function has been avoided as it affects the accuracy of the main time display and causes a decrease in accuracy.
It is this CH 28-520 series movement that caused a revolution that overturned common sense in the long history of chronographs.
This is a mechanism that eliminates the small seconds and unifies the two second hands into one, allowing the center second hand to be used for both measurement and timekeeping purposes.
There is no longer any need to worry about timekeeping accuracy even if the chronograph second hand is constantly running.
In other words, it is no longer a concept of a conventional chronograph, but even though it is a chronograph,
It can now be used like a regular 3-hand watch. In fact, in terms of design, there are multiple totalization displays like traditional 12-hour and 30-minute totalizers, so
By eliminating the three to four in-dial displays and combining the 3-hour and 4-minute counters in a vertical arrangement with two concentric needle displays at the 6 o'clock position.
It has a clean and practical design layout that is very easy to see.
This model represents the company's manufacturing philosophy, which states that "even complex mechanisms must be easy to understand."
This 5980R-001 is a strap model announced in 2010, and the differences from the bracelet model are as follows.
The dial color has been changed from black to black-brown, and the color of the 6-minute integration display scale circle on the in-dial at 30 o'clock has been changed to silver to improve visibility.
