Rare Handcrafts “Volutes and Arabesques”
The second rare handcraft model of Golden Ellipse announced in 2021.
The first item is Ref.1/1968P-50, which was produced in a limited edition of 2018 pieces worldwide in 100 to commemorate the 5738th anniversary of the collection released in 50.
This model follows that design.
The Golden Ellipse has an oval case shape that boasts perfect design proportions based on the golden section.
This is an extremely simple collection that only displays hours and minutes.
This is a long-selling model that has been around for half a century, and you can enjoy the gorgeously decorated dial that incorporates the best of the Maison's traditional decorative techniques.
This exquisitely beautiful decorative technique is produced in the same maison's rare handcraft workshop.
Two traditional decorative craft techniques are applied.
First of all, "hand engraving" (hand engraving) is engraving by the highest level master engraver,
The silver and gold dial plates invented by the famous Abraham-Louis Breguet date back to the 18th century.
It has its roots in guilloche carving, in which a regular pattern design is carved into the case body.
The maison's metal engraving is an evolution of its unique and outstanding techniques.
The design is “Volutes and Arabesques”.
The arabesque pattern is a popular traditional design in Europe.
For example, it is an image of the European version of the traditional Japanese arabesque pattern.
The main motifs are swirls, plant stems, and vine leaves.
Created as an original geometric design, this is the second traditional decorative technique.
I will pair it with “Grand Feu Black Enamel” (black cloisonné).
This technique is made by firing at a high temperature using a glassy glaze in an 800 degree flame kiln.
The technique used for this model is champlevé, which is the engraving process mentioned above.
The enamel dial is made of glass, so it will not change color over time.
This technique has been used in jewelry since ancient times because it will maintain its unchanging beauty even 1000 years from now.
Among the Grand Feu enamels, black enamel is the most difficult.
White enamel is generally produced using this technique,
Due to its color characteristics, black is more likely to have shading and unevenness than white, making it extremely difficult to achieve a finish using natural flame firing.
Even within the same maison, it is a job that requires a tremendous amount of perseverance to achieve the quality of the product as a brand.
Due to this difficulty, we are basically limited to producing only grand complication models (machines equipped with ultra-complicated mechanisms such as minute repeaters).
Moreover, it is compatible with engraving of an arabesque pattern using a separate engraver.
I am humbled by the work of the maison's top craftsmen.
Another great point is that the 5738/51G and the previous 5738/50P have the same arabesque design.
If you compare them, they are made with completely different designs.
