The grand sonnerie mechanism is the most complex and difficult to produce in the history of mechanical watches. Audemars Piguet's previous Grand Sonnerie Carillon had a diameter of 41mm, but this model is a special limited edition with a smaller diameter of 39mm. This is an unprecedented and incredibly special model for a watch equipped with a striking mechanism. Originally, as an automatic striking mechanism and the characteristics of the three hammers require sufficient space for chiming, the basic rule is to make the outer case large, with a diameter of 40 to 44 mm, regardless of the actual dimensions of the movement. However, the fact that this model's movement is 29.9 mm in diameter, 5.8 mm thick, and made up of 489 parts, yet is almost the same size as a single minute repeater, is one of the company's strengths in the field of striking mechanisms and is the result of its outstanding, virtuoso craftsmanship. The design technology used to layout the individual parts, particularly while keeping the thickness down, is miraculous and exceptional. Since its founding, the company has been a group of elite watchmakers specializing in the design and production of ultra-complex mechanisms, particularly Grand Complications, and is a leading manufacturer among the renowned watch brands of the Vallée de Joux, the heart of Swiss watchmaking. The company's true ambition as a watchmaker is perhaps embodied in mechanisms like this model. The case design follows the Jules Audemars bezel polished finish and the case sides with a hairline finish. The dial is available in five colors, and this model has a slate gray dial made of 18K gold with hand engraving. |
